Joel Maurer, M.D. completed his B.A. degree in biology at Grinnell College. He received his M.D. from the University of Nebraska. His first residency was in Family Practice at the Middlesex Hospital program in Connecticut. Subsequently he completed his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Missouri - Columbia in 2000.

Dr. Maurer worked in private practice for four years before joining the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology in early 2005 as an assistant professor. He is Board Certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Family Practice. Dr. Mauer has a strong interest in human papillomavirus infections (HPV) as well as women’s primary care issues, such as diabetes. He is also interested in research related to societal views on pregnancy termination and medical education on this topic. Dr. Maurer is highly committed to training future physicians in his role as the Lansing Clerkship Director for Michigan State University medical students in training.

Kristen Vallery, M.D. received her B.S. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Rochester and her M.D. from the University of Missouri. During medical school she was chosen for numerous awards including Outstanding Student in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Vallery completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Parkland Hospital, University of Texas in 2005. She received multiple commendations during this time for her excellence in medical knowledge as well as teaching. Dr. Vallery joined the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Michigan State University as an assistant professor in August 2005. Her particular interests include high-risk obstetrics, prenatal genetic diagnosis and endometrial ablation. Dr. Vallery is fluent in Spanish.

Julie Matyasic, PA-C, completed her BS in psychology at Michigan State University in 1990 and her physician assistant training at Western Michigan University in 1996. Since completing her education, Julie has worked extensively in primary care/family practice and also with student populations at the Michigan State University Olin Health Center. She is a board-certified Physician Assistant and an active member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Mrs. Matyasic joined the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology in 2004. Her particular interests include primary healthcare of women, as well as counseling, education, and prevention of sexually transmitted disease.
